Technologies With The Greatest Impact In 2022

If 2021 was the year of the restart, for 2022, everyone hopes for recovery without further setbacks, net of the issues related to the procurement of materials and components. But what technology trends will have the greatest impact in 2022? Our partner in the Security Media Alliance asked the companies in the sector and correlated the answers obtained with the results of a survey on the suitability and maturity index of these technological trends aimed at channel operators. The sum of the indicators obtained made it possible to identify the technologies to be considered in 2022 to guarantee a real competitive advantage.

Before examining the trends identified, a basic consideration: many technologies that have become popular due to the pandemic will continue – mutatis mutandis – to be in demand. The vertical markets that support related applications could be significant growth drivers for the sector.

However, the innovation effort made by the security industry knows how to produce beneficial technologies; therefore, knowing what makes sense to place on the market is fundamental for organic growth.

Seven “meaningful” technological trends

Integration of multiple devices

In 2022 we will see even more hardware and data integrated into physical security systems for operations that go beyond security functions: more and more sensors – and devices – will begin to integrate water, temperature, lighting, HVAC, but also lifts, and other IoT devices that make it possible to control and make buildings more efficient both in terms of energy and production.

5G: nice, but it’s not ready

A booster of the Internet of Things, and also of typical segments of security, will be 5G wireless communication. The technology is not yet ready for implementation, but we are already thinking about a future 5G: better awareness, timely alerts from unattended locations, more effective prevention, better response times, more analysis at the edge that reduce latency in the cloud, advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and constant training of new analysis models for increasingly usable information. In addition, 5G will reduce installation costs, with a significant impact, especially for smart cities.

Migration to the cloud and hybrid cloud

Cloud-based video surveillance has proven in many cases to be functional, flexible, and cost-effective: it improves operations. It creates a proactive and reliable data strategy to mitigate risks and make intelligent decisions.

In the survey, 42% of respondents stated that they are already implementing a cloud project, and the majority of them stated that they intend to use cloud services in 2022 (45% for CCTV functions and 34% for access control).

Many respondents also believe that hybrid cloud technology may soon become more common than pure cloud, as hybrid cloud adds flexibility and offers a good balance between the performance and functionality of on-premise systems and the ease of deployment of cloud solutions.

More automation and AI

2022 also promises to be a boom year for automation and artificial intelligence. And as cameras get smarter, applications will increase, deployment and installation prices will drop, and performance will improve. The survey shows that technologies related to AI analytics, such as business intelligence, forensic applications, object detection, or AI bandwidth control, are considered sufficiently mature for use by operators.

Go cyber

With the many attacks of recent years, security solutions are more than ever under scrutiny, so they will have to meet the highest cyber and privacy expectations of the market and ensure higher standards, following best practices: encryption and vulnerability testing are now essential.

Go mobile

Whether it is map or dashboard interfaces, web and mobile applications are becoming powerful response and investigation tools in real-time: in 2022, improvements are therefore expected to allow the same type of detail to be presented, in addition to the same sharing performance.

And playback of traditional videos. Users now want to perform the same number of operations on their phone or tablet that a control room could do. In the world of access control, expectations are very high: mobile solutions based on credentials will become popular because using the mobile phone as a badge is a natural gesture, moreover, touchless, therefore in line with the fight against COVID-19.

Radar and Lidar: at the time

Although the survey highlights that Radar and Lidar technologies are not yet ripe for the security market, their potential is undeniable, at least in some verticals. LiDAR sensors can, in fact, be implemented in security systems for a wide range of applications and use cases, including external/internal surveillance and public security, border control, intruder detection, access control, and perimeter protection. The critical infrastructure will be the largest security market for LiDAR technology, which would not replace cameras anyway, but would integrate video networks.
